The Perfect Aperitif

When my husband Steve and I rented an apartment in Florence a few summers ago, we got in the habit of having this exquisite cocktail each night our local outdoor cafĂ©. In my humble view, it is the season’s most sophisticated drink. Cold, sweet, bitter, a touch of sour—all add up to something beyond refreshing.

The Americano

Ice
One shot of Campari
One shot of sweet vermouth
Soda water
Slice of orange

Place lots of ice in a large glass. Add Campari and vermouth, fill the remainder of the glass with club soda. Stir. Add orange slice. I like to serve it with a straw.
